From Trust Company of Georgia to SunTrust to Truist
SunTrust's roots go back to 1891, when the Trust Company of Georgia was chartered in Atlanta. The bank's most famous early deal came in 1919, when it underwrote the first public stock offering for a small Atlanta beverage company — Coca-Cola — and ended up holding a substantial equity stake in the company for decades. Trust Company of Georgia merged with Orlando-based SunBanks in 1985 to form SunTrust Banks, and the bank took the simplified name "SunTrust Bank" in 2000.
That 119-year run as an independent institution ended in December 2019, when SunTrust legally merged with BB&T to form Truist Financial Corporation. The transition took time: combined account systems and branch rebranding weren't completed until February 2022, so SunTrust signage and account numbering persisted for over two years after the legal merger closed.
Are My Old SunTrust Checks Still Good?
For most accounts, yes. Truist has stated that the vast majority of checking, savings, and money market customers saw no change to their account or routing numbers through the merger, and older SunTrust-branded checks remain a legally valid payment instrument even after the brand disappeared. If you're unsure whether your specific account was affected, confirm with Truist before writing a large check from an old SunTrust checkbook.
For Current Truist Account Details

Frequently Asked Questions
Is SunTrust still a separate bank?
No, SunTrust merged with BB&T in 2019 to form Truist Bank. Your SunTrust accounts are now Truist accounts. Check your statement for your current routing number.
What routing number should I use?
061000104 is a commonly published Truist routing number, shown here as an example. Your actual number can differ, especially depending on whether your account originated at SunTrust or BB&T, so always confirm your specific number on your Truist statement, in Truist online banking, or by calling Truist directly before printing anything you intend to deposit or send.
When did SunTrust officially become Truist?
The merger between BB&T and SunTrust was legally completed on December 6, 2019, forming Truist Financial Corporation. The customer-facing transition took longer — core account systems and branch conversions weren't finished until February 2022, and SunTrust signage came down as part of that same rollout. If you opened your account before early 2022, it may have originated under the SunTrust name even though it's now fully a Truist account.
What was SunTrust before it was SunTrust?
SunTrust traces back to the Trust Company of Georgia, chartered in Atlanta in 1891. In 1919, under president Ernest Woodruff, the bank underwrote the first public stock offering for a small Atlanta beverage company called Coca-Cola — a deal that left the bank holding a large stake in Coca-Cola for decades afterward. Trust Company of Georgia merged with Orlando-based SunBanks in 1985 to form SunTrust Banks, and the combined bank was renamed simply "SunTrust Bank" in 2000, the name it carried until the 2019 Truist merger.
